Did you know that manganese exposures may be present within your metalworking

activities and can pose a serious health risk? The National Institutes of Health (www.nih.gov) has identified that manganism, also known as welder’s disease, can afflict welders, and is an increasing health risk to this population. Over-exposure to manganese may lead to central nervous system impairment with symptoms that may include:

-Weakness, lethargy

-Speech disturbances

-Paralysis (mask-like face, tremors)

-Psychological disturbance

There have been changes to manganese occupational exposure guidelines which may have an effect on your metal-working processes. The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) sets threshold limit values which are airborne exposure limit guidelines. The ACGIH recently lowered the threshold limit value for manganese from 0.2 mg/m³ (respirable fraction).

At 3M we are passionate about worker health and safety. To learn more about recognizing and managing manganese exposures related to metal working activities be sure to register for our upcoming webinar on October 29th. The webinar will provide an opportunity to learn more about the health effects of over-exposure to manganese, exposure limits, industry best practices, and strategies for controlling exposures such as through appropriate selection and use of respiratory protection.

3M is partnering with EHS Today to deliver this educational webinar, and we encourage you to share this with other EHS professionals and production supervisors who would be interested.
